Cipher Box: Build-It-Yourself Wooden Safe

You get 104 laser-cut plywood pieces and about ninety minutes. What you end up with is a working mechanical safe: a real combination dial, a lock that actually engages, and a release lever that only moves once the code is right.

No glue. Every piece friction-fits, the way a good kit should, and the gears you assemble are the gears that do the work. Turn the dial three times to reset, land on your first number, reverse for the second, forward for the third. The lever moves. The lid lifts.

The compartment nobody expects

Twist the flower mechanism on the lid and it irises open like a camera shutter. Underneath is a compartment sized for exactly one thing: a ring. Below that, the main cavity holds whatever else you want kept safe, from notes to keys to the small things that deserve better than a drawer.

Set your own three-digit code

Pick any combination. An anniversary, a birthday, the day you met. Once it is set, the box is closed to everyone who does not know it, and the only way in is to solve it or be told.
